As part of its continuing charity partnership with Tesco Diabetes UK had arranged for a second collection to take place in Tesco stores throughout the UK.Once again the Group decided to take part and Mike Broome again volunteered as the Team Leader, to collect at the St Oswald’s store in Gloucester. Nine group members volunteered, as well as five volunteers from the general public, as the event was publicised country wide by Diabetes UK.
The collection took place from Friday 13 June to Sunday 15 June, with three shifts of 3 hours on Friday & Saturday and two shifts on Sunday (early closing), with three people per shift.
As well as collecting, we also had a table with various information leaflets to help raise awareness of diabetes and the existence of the Group. We had quite a few people stop and talk about their experiences with diabetes or ask questions. We tried to answer all enquires as best we could or suggested they contact their GP for medical advice.
The weekend was again very successful, and all who took part enjoyed themselves, especially the two young girls Rosie & Ella, it being Rosie’s second time collecting for us. As it was June the weather was much warmer than last October, so much so, that Richard and I showed our legs, this did not appear to put people off, despite some comments to the contrary!
The magnificent total of £1201.00 was raised, and this money will go to Diabetes UK so they can carry on with their research projects and continue to support diabetics throughout the UK.
Mike would like to thank the Tesco’s staff, in particular Bob Granville, the store Community Support Rep for their assistance over the weekend. However, above all, thanks to the following volunteers, without whose generosity in giving up their valuable time and their positive, friendly approach to one and all, the collection would not have been possible or as successful:
- Helen Bishop
- Jane Broome – 2 shifts
- Mike Coombs
- Norman & Pat Douse
- Michelle Douse
- Sarah Gibbons and daughter Rosie
- Ros Gibbs
- Jo Kelly
- Richard Parnell – 2 shifts
- Tina Power
- Geoff Ranstead
- Ann-Marie Taylor and daughter Ella
- Graham Terret – 2 shifts
