The Group received an invite from Richmond Retirement Village at Painswick to take part in their Health Awareness Day on Wednesday 14 October 2014. The original plan was for us to set up an information stall, along with other organisations, for the day and give a short talk to raise awareness of diabetes amongst the residents & visitors. However the event organisers subsequently decided they would not have the stalls, but still wished for us to attend and give a talk.
Mike Broome agreed to give the talk covering what diabetes is, the risk factors, symptoms and what hypos are and how to deal with them. He also explained the truth or not of some of the common myths and misconceptions about diabetes. The most common being that those with diabetes cannot eat sugar, which of course we all know is not true (but of course it must be controlled!)
Although there were no stalls as such, Mike did take some diabetes literature and leaflets along, and after the talk had a chat to some of the audience and handed out the literature to those who wanted it.
Mike would like to thank Simone Clifford for organising the day and making Mike so welcome.
