Well another Big Collection Weekend (BCW) has come and gone, this year being the third year we have taken part, albeit only over two days this year.  This year the weekend was organised as  part of the partnership between Diabetes UK, British Heart Foundation and Tesco’s.  We collected again at the Tesco’s St Oswald’s store in Gloucester.

We were collecting from 9 am to 6pm on the Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on the Sunday.  The weather was a little bit damp and cold (for June!) on the Saturday, which resulted in a bit of a slow start, but the shoppers soon came in their droves(!) with many dropping some coins in the buckets.  The Sunday was brighter, although again a slow start but it soon picked up with a steady flow of shoppers passing us by.  Again many stopped to make a donation.  Whilst we had set out our stall I do not think we had as many people stop and ask for information or advice as we did last year, we certainly did not hand out as many leaflets this year. As part of its continuing charity partnership with Tesco Diabetes UK had arranged for a second collection to take place in Tesco stores throughout the UK.Once again the Group decided to take part and Mike Broome again volunteered as the Team Leader, to collect at the St Oswald’s store in Gloucester. Nine group members volunteered, as well as five volunteers from the general public, as the event was publicised country wide by Diabetes UK.

The collection took place from Friday 13 June to Sunday 15 June, with three shifts of 3 hours on Friday & Saturday and two shifts on Sunday (early closing), with three people per shift.

As well as collecting, we also had a table with various information leaflets to help raise awareness of diabetes and the existence of the Group. We had quite a few people stop and talk about their experiences with diabetes or ask questions. We tried to answer all enquires as best we could or suggested they contact their GP for medical advice. YOUR HELP NEEDED

After the great success of last Octobers Diabetes UK/Tesco’s Big Collection Weekend, another one has been organised for the weekend of 13 – 15 June 2014.   Once again the Glevum Group will be collecting at the St Oswald’s store in Gloucester, where hopefully we can beat last year’s total collected of £1305.00.  Mike Broome will again be the “Team Leader” and co-ordinate the weekend activities at the store.

The first thing of course is to seek volunteers to help over the weekend, so here is your chance to help try and improve on last year’s total and raise a significant amount of funds that Diabetes UK can use in support of those with diabetes and research into the causes and effects of the diabetes.

If you or any of your family and friends can spare some time on any of the collection days, please volunteer and support the cause. You will need to register to help, this being required for insurance and administrative reason, if you are not registered, I’m afraid you cannot help.

The easiest way to volunteer is online at  Big Collection Registration and follow the on screen  instructions. It is quite a simple procedure and should only take a two or three minutes. After registration you will receive two emails from a company called “Eventbrite”, they are providing the registration site to Diabetes UK for free.
